Life lessons.

So, when you get married, a lot of great things happen.  But some not so amazing things happen too.  Like, your family takes awesome vacations without you, and you get to sit at home and be depressed because they are having an amazing time and you are at home watching top model and drowning your sorrows in strawberry shortcake.  Just kidding.  Maybe.

Anyway, today is my dad's birthday--the first one ever I haven't been there to celebrate with him.  So, in honor of the amazing person that he is, and in the spirit of trying to lay off the shortcake, I thought I'd blog about some of the highlights of what I have learned from him.

The world is run by tired people.  {I hear it's going around}

If you say you're tired, my dad has two responses.  "I hear it's going around," and "Well, the world is run by tired people."  This is strangely motivating.  So, I'm sorry, but if you're complaining to me that you're tired, my thought are probably somewhere along the lines of, "Buck up, sunshine, you're not the only one who's tired."

Work hard and do what you want to do.

My dad is the hardest working person I know.  He is also one of the greatest dreamers I know.  Nothing is impossible, if you ask him.  Start a church with only 3 other people in one of the most unchurched areas in FL?  Done.  Need to buy a church building but don't have any money?  Not a problem.  Get sued because a creepy cult has the same name as your church? Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it.  My dad has such faith that if you do what you're supposed to do, then what's supposed to happen will happen, regardless of how crazy or impossible it seems.

Over the years there have been tons of things I have said I wanted to do.

I want to change my major. {oh and that'll probably cost another few thousand dollars}
I want to write a book.
I want to start a blog.
I want to move to New York and do a journalism internship.
I want to start a business.
I want to go to another country.

Do it.
You have to do that.
Oh, definitely do that.
Do it.  How can I help?
You can do it.
You should do it.
Definitely.

Not "Oh, and how are you going to do that?"  Never " Yeah, that's not a great idea."  Not once "You can't do that." Always, "You can do it, you can do it, you can do it."

Be whoever you want to be and don't worry about what anyone else says.

Over the past seven years, I cannot even count all of the mean things I've hear said about my dad.  In the line of work he's in, it's unfortunately very common.
People have said things about him that have made me so angry that I literally feel like my heart is on fire, so I feel like the appropriate thing to do is to retaliate with all that I've got. {Say whatever the heck you want to about me, but say something about my family?  Yeah, we're done.}
His response has always been the same.  A nod.  A "hmm, well."  And then back to whatever he's doing and he does not bring it up again.  He takes everything with a grain of salt, because again, he believes that if you're doing what you know you're supposed to be doing, it doesn't matter if anyone else has a problem with you. I have never once seen him retaliate against anyone who has said anything about him.  It's downright inspiring, let me tell you.

Enjoy Life.
"We're not allowed to get offended."
"I decided not to get stressed anymore."
"I don't believe in being overwhelmed."
And it's as simple as that.

Enjoy life because it is short and was made to be lived, not tolerated.

Genuinely good people are extremely hard to come by.  I just happened to be blessed with having one as a father.  Here's to you, pops.

Dreams and such.

Can we even believe it's August already?!

I loved every second of summertime, but I'm excited for August.  For me, August marks the beginning of the beginning of fall, the most wonderful season of all!  {I know that's stretching it, but what else are we going to celebrate in August?}

If you've been around my blog any amount of time, you know that I want to be a writer and I want to write books.  You also know that I'm extremely passionate about following your dreams.  So that's what I've been doing this year, following my dream of being a writer.  I've made a lot of progress, and the next step for me is so close, except for one little thing.

Money.

As it always seems to go in life, right?

I really want to be able to take that next step in following my dream this August, and I know it's totally possible.  So I've added some new things to my etsy shop in hopes that you will fall in love with them and, in a roundabout way, support this journey I'm on.

So what do you say?  You buy some pretty things to brighten up your August, and I get to keep chasing my dream.  It's a win-win-win-win-win.

Have an AMAZING Tuesday, beautiful people.

After an amazing week in NYC..

I'm writing this stuck in an airport.
A 9pm flight turned into an 12am flight, and I'm pretty sure that's not the end of that.
Booo.
But this is life.
And if you only enjoy the "good" moments in life, you miss out on a lot of moments that could potentially be good. And maybe even your new favorite memories.
You only get one wild and precious life, in the words of Mary Oliver. What is it you plan to do with it?
I plan to enjoy it.
All of it.
Even the extremely long, delayed layovers in an airport that is colder than the North Pole.
I hope you do the same.

Now I'm off to find some airport food.

Over and out.

Today, I believe..

Today, I believe in laughter.

{especially with your best friend}

I believe in things that make your heart happy.

{just hanging out on the dining room table.  No big.}

I believe that crafting makes your life better.

I believe in giving away free things, just because it's Wednesday.

Higher than I.

There are days where I feel like where I want to be is so far away from where I actually am.
Weeks that are so busy, I feel like I should receive a worst wife of the year award for all the things I didn't get done.
Days where work is so stressful that when I finish for the day, I want to sleep for two days.
Where my to-do list and got-done list are vastly different in size.
And sometimes, all of these things happen at once.
And that, my friends, is what we call overwhelming.
Overwhelmed looks different for everyone, but it happens to all of us, every once in a while.

It would be really cool if we could just talk about our dreams and go after them and reach them, all the while keeping up with our to-do lists and the rest of life like pros, and never ever feel overwhelmed.
But I'm pretty sure that's impossible.
Something I do know, though, is this: when my heart is overwhelmed, there is a Rock higher than I. {Psalm 61:2}
He knows I'm overwhelmed, and He is there.  To listen, to encourage, to renew and refresh.
In an overwhelming world, He is a steady foundation--those don't come along too often.
This is an incredible gift we have been given.
A constant in our busy lives.  A quiet place in the midst of a world that never stops making noise.
And sometimes, we need that.

If you're overwhelmed today, I hope you take refuge in a God that knows you inside and out, and is there for you every second of your incredibly busy day.
And if you're not overwhelmed, remember to be thankful that we have such a God, and take a few moments to rest in Him anyway.

I hope you all have an amazing Tuesday!  Head over to Chevron & Lace to enter to win yourself some pretty things!

Favorites.

how pretty is this?

Happy Friday!  Here's to a weekend full of creativity and relaxation.

A few of my favorite blogs this week:

Top Not Mom's blog always has the most delicious looking recipes, but I think these may be my favorite so far.  Cheesecake and  cupcakes?  Is this even real??

Erin wrote a really sweet blog about things to remember when you put on your makeup in the morning.

Jcaro wrote an amazing post on why her husband doesn't fulfill her--it's worth the read.

Happy weekending!
