How I Taught Myself to Like Greek Yogurt.

Some days, I blog about personal things, like becoming a mom when I thought I didn't want a baby. Some days, I blog about deep feelings, like when life is hard. And then some days, I come here and write about greek yogurt.

Blogging is weird. And I love it.

Moving on.

I have never, ever liked greek yogurt. And by I've never liked it, I mean cannot stand the taste of it. I like normal yogurt, just so long as it's flavored. Yogurt is such a healthy breakfast! So imagine my surprise once I got pregnant and actually had to start paying attention to the things I ate (ugh) when I realized that the yogurt I was eating in the name of health was actually just artificially flavored sugar.
Sigh.

I tried to make myself like greek yogurt towards the end of my pregnancy because the little baby inside of my HATED EVERYTHING. I basically went 40 straight weeks eating no meat unless it was in the form of Chick-Fil-A nuggets. And also, no vegetables. What can I say, he had good tastes from the beginning. So it goes without saying that I was in desperate need of some protein.

I pinterested it (duh) and tried mixing in granola. Which was great, but I could still taste the greek yogurt, so, nope.

Then, I actually had Jack, and lost every ounce of my appetite (but not every ounce of the weight he so generously gave me, funny how that works) but obviously needed to eat, so I decided to revisit the whole greek yogurt mystery.

Enter: almond butter.

I will stop here to say that someone DID tell me to do this, but it was in the first week of being a mom and I just can't remember who it was. If you are reading this and it was you, please tell me and I will gladly give you credit for this life-changing advice.
You mix almond butter with greek yogurt, and suddenly, you can taste something other than the greek yogurt. And it's actually pretty delicious.
So. Dang. Simple.

I am not lying to you when I tell you that I now eat this every single morning.

I mix my magic almond yogurt with blueberries, coconut, almonds, granola...whatever I have on hand, really. And I'm in the camp that while it's good to be healthy, life is too short to be miserable because of non-delicious food, so you can trust me that this is actually good. And easy. And doesn't have to be warmed up 84 times before I actually get a chance to eat it. Win-win-win.
Are you a greek yogurt fan?

  1. I've been trying to learn to like greek yogurt too-- even if I put it in smoothies I can tell and the aftertaste or whatever it is, is just not appealing. I do love it with a lot of granola and things (aka chocolate) mixed in though!

  2. I'm impressed! I don't think greek yogurt is anything that I will ever be able to eat but I'm glad that you found a way to make it yummy for you :)

  3. I eat something super similar but I never MIX the almond butter WITH the yogurt. GENIUS.

  4. I absolutely love Greek yogurt, but I grew up eating it. It wasn't until college that I tasted some Yoplait flavored yogurt, and I almost threw up because it was way too sweet.

One of my favorite ways to eat greek yogurt is by mixing it with chopped up cucumbers, dill, and garlic. It's life changing, but I will always take savory flavors over sweet any day.

  5. Ugh I wish I could eat this every morning-- I'm so not a breakfast person (unless we are going out to eat) but I know it's so important to eat (and eat WELL) in the morning. I'm a fan of greek yogurt (I use it to replace sour cream in tacos/chili/etc.) but I have yet to try it for breakfast!

  6. first, hi you are so pretty. I like greek yogurt (i know, it's weird) but once I had it in Greece (its way different than American) i found brands I loved!

  7. This is SUCH a good idea! I really like flavored Greek yogurt, but I wouldn't be able to handle a non-flavored version.

  8. There's no way I could eat plain Greek yogurt by itself (using it as a substitute for sour cream is fine though!). I eat honey flavored. Or if I have plain, I put honey in it. And fruit too, if I have any.

  9. I don't mind Greek yogurt, but only if it's prepared in certain ways. :) When I eat yogurt, I actually like to mix it with frozen berries (that are hopefully not tiny and shriveled and gross) and then leave it overnight. As the berries thaw, the juice mixes with the yogurt and that's palatable. Then I add granola, in case the berries are kinda gross. But I typically weed them out when I'm putting them in.

This sounds like a good way to do it too!

  10. Holy cow, why did I not think of this! This sounds amazing! I am going to try this.

  11. Brilliant! Personally I don't mind Greek yogurt...I even use the plain kind instead of sour cream wherever I can since it's so much better for you.

  12. I love greek yogurt - any type that is mixed berry is my favorite, because I think that maskes the actual yogurt taste if that makes sense? Definitely want to try this, though!

  13. This is so funny. I used to not like greek yogurt either but for some reason started liking it recently. I'll mix in a bit of honey in with the TJ's blend or add it to my smoothies. I've never had almond butter but now I want to try it!

  14. I struggle with greek yogurt also! I've tried so many different ways-- honey, stevia, powdered peanut butter, more stevia, fruit, you name it. But I've never tried almond butter before! Definitely something new to use!

  15. I've grown to like greek yogurt too! Adding dark chocolate chips, granola and chia seeds does it for me. Yours looks way cooler (and probably healthier!) than mine. Great source of protein, for sure!

  16. Hahah YES I do this too! But I dip apples in it, or put it on rice cakes. Really such a good easy source of protein. But not good on its own lol.

  17. Yum. I like this idea. I like Greek yogurt, but it has to be flavored.

  18. Great tip! I may have to try that as I am always looking for something to jazz it up since I eat 8 oz of the stuff a day. Right now I do a packet of stevia and/or protein powder, and fiber one cereal but I'd like to do away with the need to add stevia.

  19. I love Greek yogurt, but not by itself. I've been making smoothies. I mix blueberries, local lavender honey, 1/2 & 1/2 (or milk) and it is so good! There are also these new things called smoothie bowls. I haven't tried them but they look fun.
