If you're anything like me, you made a list of goals and resolutions and aspirations last weekend. And, if you're anything like me, you've probably already messed those up, maybe even more than once. If you're like me, you're probably already feeling a little overwhelmed and frustrated by them. And, if you're anything like me, you will probably dance this dance with your goals all year long. But that's okay. It's how growth happens.
I don't want to stress you out or send you over the edge (not yet, anyway-it's only January, there's plenty of year left for that), but I have one more thing I think you should add to your list. Or, if you're over it, one thing that should replace your list. Because it's that important.
Make your life a place you like to be.
So ridiculously simple in theory, so ridiculously hard in execution.
Here would be a great spot to write 5 easy steps to making your life a place you actually like being, but I can't, because I don't know them. They're different for everyone and I think we're all kind of trying to figure them out. So I can't give you an easy fix to make this happen, but I can tell you two things. As someone who's in your corner, as someone who wants you to be happy and successful and in love with your life, I can tell you:
1. If you're not in love with your life, that is okay. It doesn't mean that you don't love your family or that you're a bad girlfriend or a bad mom or that you're not thankful for your job. It's okay to feel disappointed that your life doesn't look like you expected it to. It's okay to feel overwhelmed with reality and frustrated with where you are. It is okay.
BUT...
2. You're the only one who can change that...and you do need to change it.
Here's the thing...we get in this pattern of being okay with blaming the circumstances we can't change. Maybe you're stuck in a job that you hate, and no matter how many flowery quotes you see on Pinterest about you being in control of your own destiny, it truly is not feasible for you to leave right now. That sucks, and I'm sorry.
But it's not a reason to not like your life.
A bad boss or an overwhelming list of responsibilities that fall to you or a big failure last year or a dream that hasn't come true yet...all of those suck. They hurt. But they are not exclusive to having a life you like.
Maybe you do need to make a big change, like quitting your job or moving somewhere new. Or maybe you just need to make some little changes, like buying the expensive coffee for yourself or meeting up with friends more or spending more time on your hobbies.
Make 2017 the year you fall in love with your life, no matter what you've got stacked against you. This life is yours, no one else's. Might as well make it a place you like to be.
What's something you can do to make your life a place you enjoy?
