People Who Need to Stop Killing My Vibe: Pregnancy Edition.

Some of my favorite posts ever are the lists of people who need to stop killing my vibe (here and here). I think we have established that there are rude people who can't keep their thoughts to themselves pretty much everywhere you go, but let me just tell you...those people come crawling out of the woodwork when you're pregnant. It's like your growing stomach is an open invitation for strangers to come up to you and say inappropriate/rude/bizarre things.

When I was pregnant, I kept a list on my phone of these things to use for a blog post. And then I forgot all about it, because, you know, I was having baby. But I found it this morning, and so I present to you: The Pregnancy Edition of People Who Need to Stop Killing My Vibe.

People who say, "You look tired!"

And then wait, as if I am going to explain why I look so tired. Because surely it couldn't have anything to do with the fact that I AM GROWING A HUMAN.

People who say, "No more of that! Life as you know it is over!"

Sure. Also, when you get a new job, life as you know it is over. Or when you move, life as you know it is over. My life is changing, it is not over.

People who tell me they can tell I'm definitely hang a girl, no matter what the ultrasound says.

I mean, I have a pretty graphically obvious picture on my fridge that says otherwise, but okay.

People who ask me how much weight I have gained.

See also: People who now ask me how much weight I've lost.

People who ask, "Yes, but is your HUSBAND really happy?"

I actually got this one a lot. It's always asked like, "But did he actually want a baby?" As if this is a one person job.

No, I secretly got myself pregnant on purpose and now I'm making him stay with me through his misery..why don't you let me tell you all the juicy details?

Also, I'm fine, thanks for asking.

Anyone who sees pregnancy as an invitation to tell me a horror story about something terrible that happened to their friend when she was pregnant.

And most recently: People who like to retroactively tell me what I did wrong when I was pregnant.

I know you guys have some of these! Please oh please share them.

  1. Love this post! Note to self: don't say any of these things to friends who are pregnant :)

  2. I can't believe people say those things!! Crazy!

  3. Oh dear lord!! These gifs are hilarious but I'm appalled that people would ask/say some of these things. If I can swing it, I'm hiding my pregnancy and then wha-bam-a-bam a baby is here. Ha!

  4. YES. I heard all of these other than people not believing the gender. I think the most popular was asking if my husband was happy about this. Why is it assumed that men don't want to be a father? And when we found out I was having a girl, I would get a panicked "but how does James feel about this?!" Are you kidding me? He was thrilled. He screamed louder than I did in the ultrasound room. One girl at work once told me "you're a walking reminder to take my birth control," which I will admit made me laugh. And my favorite, the girl who cornered me in the bathroom and said "Wow! You're huge! When was your due date?" It's still three weeks away, lady. And because I'm on a roll and can't stop: the people who tell you to sleep now because you'll never sleep again. Because obviously you can bank your sleep. And sometimes I think I slept worse while pregnant than I did after the baby was born.

  5. I can't imagine ever saying any of these things to someone-- I can't even imagine!

  6. Oh my word - people are crazy! The one about asking if your husband is really happy...what kind of question is that?!?!

  7. Who in the world would ask if your husband is happy! That is so crazy! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  8. Ugh, people are SO RUDE. I like to stick with How are you feeling?", "Congratulations!", "When are you due?", and "Are you going to find out if s/he is a boy or girl?" I feel like those are polite, friendly questions. But I've heard of people asking if pregnancies were an accident! HORRIBLE!!

  9. I got all of these when o was pregnant. For some reason people think pregnancy is a free pass to say whatever comes to mind. Ridiculous.

  10. Ughhh people are the worst sometimes aren't they? So sorry you went through all this rudeness, all people should be asking is if there's something they can do for you and offer a big congrats! My all time favorite is how your life is supposedly over, so not true! If anything it's just beginning :-D

  11. did i ever tell you about the lady who decided to tell me about her birth story, which included her babies FOOT COMING OUT FIRST? i cried right on the spot. people = stupid.

  12. This is hilarious!!!! I also loved people asking "oh were you trying for a baby???" umm... either answer is awkward. If you answer "yes" then it's like "we've been having copious amounts of sex, thanks for noticing" and if you answer "no" then it's like "well we didn't really want this kid, but whoops here we are." People are so weird toward pregnant women!

  13. People who share the details about their friend/cousin/coworker's horror stories deserve to be punched in the throat. Also, since Billy and I were not married yet when I was expecting I got TONS of questions about when we planned to get married. I guess that is logical but I could not think of anything I less wanted to do than plan and have a wedding when I was pregnant.

  14. People are seriously SO crazy! People have asked me so many times, "Is Jared freaking out?!" Um no, he's probably more calm than I've been- he wants children too ya know! It's always awkward when someone comments on your size- whether big or small or 'how you're carrying' I just never know how to respond.

  15. People are so inconsiderate! It's none of their business! Unsolicited advice is the one thing I am not looking forward to when I am pregnant.

  16. Oh my gosh that would be infuriating! If/when I'm pregnant and people ask me if my husband wanted a baby I'm going to freak out because he's the one who has said to me, "Let's have a baby!" long before we were even engaged! I need to like write these down and come up with witty responses I can give so in the future when I'm pregnant I can practice them. Ha!

  17. The things that come out of people's mouths amazes and sickens me. You are growing a human, creating life...a miracle!! Let's leave it as that people!

    ReplyDelete
  18. haha yep, I heard every single one of these...multiple times. except because we didn't find out the gender, we had people telling us, "oh you're carrying high so you're definitely having a girl/boy", usually the same reason got different gender predictions. it was so funny. I just started saying, well, you've got a 50/50 chance of being right! my pet peeve are the people who insist on sharing their horror stories...that's not nice, and also, not helpful. I should track this with my next one.

  19. Ohhhhh my vibe is killed just READING this!!!! Now, I haven't been pregnant yet, but my LEAST favorite thing that I've witnessed again and again is when people ask you the name of the future baby, you tell them, and then they proceed to tell you why they hate that name or about someone awful they knew with the same name. This is why my boyfriend and I have already decided that when people ask the name of our future child, we are saying that his/her name will be Megatron. ;)

  20. My biggest pet peeve was when people heard I was having a natural birth and called me a hippie or told me I wouldn't be able to do it. Proved them wrong =)

    ReplyDelete
  21. I just can't believe the things people say. It's unreal. I could never say this stuff to anyone! I can't believe you were able to keep it together!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hahahahaha! I see so many currently pregnant or previously pregnant women say these same things. We have not been able to successfully conceive yet (we've lost two to early miscarriage) but I can't wait to finally experience this. I have so many retorts ready.

    ReplyDelete
  23. LOL! I'm cracking up. That T.Swift gif is gold.

    ReplyDelete
  24. People can totally freaking suck sometimes when you're pregnant! I just learned to laugh at them and go about my merry way, making sure to shove them out of my way with my belly if needed. People!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hahahaha YES to all of these! And also the people who ask if I'm carrying twins.

    ReplyDelete
  26. first things first, that tswift gif is my reaction to most things. second of all i ALWAYS take offense to "you look tired" hoooow rude.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I had a lot more intrusive questions prior to getting pregnant as I had been married awhile. BUT the one that surprises me the most is when people ask me if I'm coming back to work. That's kind of a loaded question ... haha.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Is your husband happy? People asked that? Are you kidding me?!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Seriously some people are just crazy. Why would they ever ask if your husband is happy? That's just ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  30. When I was pregnant with my son a older man came up to me and asked me if I was having twins. I said, no, just one baby. He then asked if I was due that day because I was "so huge." Um no, I'm 7 months pregnant. Thanks for asking. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  31. People seriously asked if your husband was happy? What is wrong with people?

    ReplyDelete
  32. i cannot believe people asked you if your husband was happy or wanted a baby!! talk about rude!

    ReplyDelete
  33. OMG Yes to so many of these! The one that pissed me off the most is when people tell you what you did wrong when you were pregnant. When my little girl was born she had issues regulating her blood sugar levels and the assigned pediatrician in the NICU decided that my child's issue was completely my fault and that I should be lectured. Mind you she had never met me, yet assumed that all I did was eat junk food my entire pregnancy. I hadn't been more mindful of what I ate in my entire life than I was while pregnant. I wanted to punch her in the face, but instead educated her on my diet. UGH! I'm still so mad! haha

  35. PEOPLE SUCK SO MUCH END OF STORY. I've gotten a lot of these to and it takes every bone in my body to not ask people how they think any of these things are their business. I legit had a family member at my last baby shower make a comment assuming I have gestational diabetes because my belly is so big, my baby much be so big too. I have zero clue how I kept my composure on that one.

    ReplyDelete
  36. These are so funny. My boss just had her second baby last month and we'd always talk about all of the rude and ridiculous things people said!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I feel like we need to collectively come up with one totally awesome response to these people so that whenever I'm pregnant one day, I'm ready for the bastards.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I double checked this with Jordan just to make sure I'm not having selective memory loss, but it really didn't bother me when people said my stomach was huge. I know that does bother some people, but I mean. it WAS HUGE. But the people who continued to tell me I was having a boy even though the ultrasound said girl were kind of obnoxious. Also, the people who told me life would be over after the baby came. That's mean and unhelpful! Just no.
