1. Free. Books. Um, hello...why do we need to go any further than this? Why would you pay money for books when you can read them for free?
2. You can stay there and read all day long and no one will care. If you want to stay in a bookstore and read all day (hello, heaven), you're sure to get side-eye and attitude from everyone working there. Which is understandable, since you're reading the books and putting them back, instead of, you know, paying for them. But the library? Stay as long as you want. Or take the books with you and go outside. I'd love to see you try to "borrow" a book from Barnes & Noble and promise to bring it back inside when you were finished reading it.
3. You can request whatever books you want. Feel like reading but don't feel like browsing the shelves for what you want? No problem. Just go online and put in what you want to read. They'll let you know when the books you requested are there, and you just walk in and pick them up.
When a sure-to-be-a-bestseller is coming out, you can put your name on the waiting list instead of checking the library for it every day.
does anyone else remember this magic?
5. You can now rent library books on your kindle. THIS IS REAL LIFE.
6. It's the perfect place to find your new favorite book. While I love book stores with my whole heart, they are usually filled with brand new books--the ones that are currently at the top of the charts and the ones that came out within the last year.
That's great, but there are books that came out two or five or ten years ago that may just be waiting to be my new favorite book.
The library is full of books of all kinds: bestsellers and not so much, old books and new books and everything in-between. So just browsing the shelves could lead you to find a new favorite you never would have heard of.
Love this! I always wanted to go to the library in Beast's castle :-P
ReplyDeleteI love the library. My mom used to take my brother and I weekly and we would hang out for hours. I love the smell of library books and the calming atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteI love the library! I don't even want to think about how much I'd spend on books if I didn't have that option! I go pretty much once a week!
ReplyDeleteI loooove the library! The real one, but being able to get ebooks is definitely one of the greatest things ever!
ReplyDeleteYES! I recently re-ignited my love for the library, and just in time to get a kindle. I didn't realize you could rent ebooks until someone told me. BEST THING EVER. I literally just checked out 7 books to take on vacation with me. They will all be at my fingertips through my kindle - no toting them around - and they were all FREE! The library is such an outstanding resource, I can't believe more people don't take advantage of it.
ReplyDeletePeople look at me strange when I say I got a book from the library. But HELLO free books?! Yes.
ReplyDeleteI go at least once a week. I put books on hold, I rarely browse anymore.
ReplyDeleteI love books and this post is great.
ReplyDeleteLove the library! Since I have to spend around $100 each term for textbooks, I do not buy books to read for fun once school is over. I often leave with more books than I can read because I can check out 100 books at a time and why wouldn't it do that? Library is definitely my best friend!
ReplyDeleteword. praise hands.
ReplyDeleteI still can't believe some libraries deliver...INSANE! I love the library (:
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to the library in years. I am not really sure why? Maybe because the one in my city has weird hours and is far away from my house? I could go to the one near work but I like making excuses. Perhaps I need to look in to this! See if I can get a library card there even though it is a different county than where I live.
ReplyDeleteYes! I love the library not only for books but for renting movies!
ReplyDeleteI love the library and am in walking distance to our local branch. I go all the time and don't understand why more people don't use it!! When I was a teacher the local library would deliver 30-40 themed books to go with the units we were teaching and it was amazing. You just have to love the library!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I LOVEEEEE the library! It is literally one of my favorite places on earth, and I'm in there at least once a week. I agree with every single reason on your list;)
ReplyDeleteLOVE this post because I LOVE the library. I actually have three different library cards to three different library districts. My husband thinks I am insane for driving 45 minutes or so to a different library, but hey I like books. I currently have 42....yes 42 books checked out from all said 3 libraries!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE the library for all of those reasons. The online stuff is incredible and our tiny town library is part of the county system so we can request pretty much any books at all.
ReplyDeleteI USE THE LIBRARY IN CHINA. Yes, seriously. It's amazing!!!!!! :D I can request books from home and have them on my Kindle and read them here. Best use of tax dollars ever, right?
ReplyDeleteWait... WAIT... are you implying that the downtown Orlando library DELIVERS.... Tell me more!! Email me!
ReplyDeleteDelivery? Wow. And I still haven't figured out the online rental thing but I will. I just rediscovered the library again this year after a 5 year hiatus and it got me back on the reading regular thing again.
ReplyDeleteI used to go to the library all the time and then I stopped for no particular reason and my library card lapsed from lack of use. I need to start going again, especially since I've gotten back in to the habit of reading a lot.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the library, but there is something just so satisfying about having my own collection of books too. I honestly have not stepped foot in a library since back when I was in school studying.

I ADORE this post! The library has been my BFF since I could read. I notice that I try to convince everyone around me to love the library as much as I do! My library has music CD's and DVD's so it's like a free RedBox!
ReplyDeleteThe library is definitely one of my favorite places! Definitely taking advantage of it this summer so I can have great reads while sunbathing.
ReplyDeleteGosh I haven't been to the Library in the longest time, but I really must change that! I used to love going all the time when I was younger. And I always wanted a library as grand as the one from Beauty and the Beast! x Carly
ReplyDeleteI'm just starting to renew my love of the library. These are great points and I love having a chance to borrow books instead of spending money on them... Though I also would LOVE to have a personal library at home. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love my library. Less than a week after buying my house and moving I got my library card, even before going grocery shopping. I love having all the books I want at my disposal.
ReplyDeletei spend soooo much on books - i really need to check out my local library, especially for kindle books!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger I used to be so obsessed with the library. Somehow in recent years I've totally forgotten about it - I think I need to make a trip!
ReplyDeleteall the yes to these. i go to our library at least once a week (though i try for two times really) and it just makes me so happy to be there amongst all those words and covers and people.
ReplyDeletehave you heard of little free libraries? oh my soul so freakin' cool.
My hubby is a librarian so you know I adore libraries ;)
ReplyDeleteOnce Chipotle, Starbucks, and my library deliver, I won't have to leave my house ever again.
ReplyDeleteI use the library during spring, summer and fall, so basically any season that I don't have to brave frigid temps, ice and snow to pick up or return anything. Now if my library delivered AND picked up books, that would be the best thing ever! :)
ReplyDeleteI love the library in my hometown. I still go to it when I'm home. I love the smell of the books; brings back such amazing memories! Great post, friend!
ReplyDeleteYes yes yes!!! I work at a library, I'm getting a graduate degree in library science, I read books and e-books (and listen to audiobooks!) exclusively from the library, I'm learning Spanish through a free program at my library .... I LOVE THE LIBRARY! What a great post. :)
